About The Speaker
Suzie is an Associate Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Leicester and winner of the 2017 BBC Two television program "Astronauts, Do You Have What It Takes". She specialises in space weather; understanding how explosions from the Sun travel through the solar system and impact the planets, in particular, the Earth and Mercury. Space weather has profound impacts on our modern day society, having the potential to disrupt power grids, telecommunication and GPS systems, as well as damaging spacecraft instrumentation and posing a hazard to astronaut health. Suzie is now a high altitude mountaineer & explorer having also written computer code to identify mountains in South America that didn’t exist on previous lists or maps. She sets off annually to scale these incredibly remote, un-climbed mountains, exploring new regions of our planet. For HFC19, Suzie will share her unique insights into understanding, assessing and managing risk.
