About The Speaker

Sabrina Cohen-Hatton

Sabrina trained as an experimental psychologist whilst serving as a fire officer and now combines both roles. In addition to her operational role, she is also an Honorary Research Fellow with Cardiff University. This unique perspective allows her to research decision-making in places where most psychologists can't; actual incidents, from the viewpoint of the operational commander. Her work has included fitting helmet-mounted video cameras to capture incidents from commanders’ exact point of view, followed by cognitive debriefs to analyse their decision-making process. Sabrina has experience of both the practical and the theoretical, she has worked in various different roles within the fire service leading to her most recent role as Deputy Assistant Commissioner. This requires a panoramic, strategic view of the service requirements for a whole region. Sabrina has been involved in various projects including the development of National Operational Guidance and is soon to be the author of “Heat of the Moment”, A careful selection of incidents unpacked to reveal the realities of firefighting which also shed light on the skills and qualities essential to surviving a fast-paced, high-pressured and emotionally-charged working environment.
